Mixing Up Healthier Choices: Woodland Elementary’s Student Leaders Serve Up Smoothies and Smiles

At Woodland Elementary in Stockbridge, a group of young changemakers—HealthMPowers’ Student Health Advocates (SHAs)—set out to inspire their peers to make healthier food choices. Fueled by a shared vision, these young leaders turned a simple idea into a hands-on initiative that’s impacting their entire school.

From Vision Board to Smoothie Baristas

The students started with a question: How could they encourage their friends to eat more fruits and vegetables and rely less on sugary drinks? After brainstorming and creating a vision board, they settled on a delicious solution—a smoothie recipe project. Each SHA would become a “smoothie barista,” crafting creative recipes that highlighted fun, lesser-known fruits and veggies to introduce new flavors and nutrients to their classmates.

Building a Recipe Calendar and Inspiring Peers

With creativity and determination, the Woodland SHAs developed unique smoothie recipes and even created a recipe calendar, which they presented to classmates through the school’s Student of the Month program. The highlight of their project? A schoolwide taste test event scheduled during recess, where students could sample the recipes. This event, organized in partnership with school administration, promised to bring students together for a hands-on, taste-test experience that made healthy eating exciting.

Overcoming Challenges with Teamwork

The SHA’s encountered some challenges along the way, like finding meeting times, coordinating with administration, and ensuring that the project didn’t disrupt instructional time. But their persistence paid off. With an action plan in place and all the necessary approvals secured, these young advocates showed that even the youngest leaders can overcome obstacles to create meaningful change.

A Lasting Impact on Healthy Habits

The taste test event was a success, with students lining up to try the smoothies and discovering that healthy choices can be fun and delicious. Through this project, Woodland’s SHAs are making an impact that goes beyond recipes. They’re shifting attitudes and proving that healthy habits can be exciting, achievable, and—most importantly—delicious!

What’s Next for Woodland’s SHAs?

Looking ahead, Woodland’s Student Health Advocates are already thinking about their next big idea to promote wellness in their school. If their smoothie project is any indication, these young leaders are just getting started on their journey to inspire a healthier community, one fun initiative at a time.
