What We Learned This Summer About Youth Voice

Five Lessons from the Points of Light and National Service-Learning Conference

While students were away this summer, the HealthMPowers team was learning right alongside them.

One of those opportunities came when Youth Strategy team member Adria Meyer attended the joint Points of Light and NSLC Conference, an unprecedented gathering that brought youth leaders, nonprofit professionals, educators, and community changemakers together under a shared theme: “Youth Voices Lighting the Way.”

The conference was built around a powerful idea: young people are not preparing to lead someday; they are already leading today. The conference emphasized that youth leaders are actively strengthening communities, mobilizing peers, and helping shape the future of civic engagement and service.

HealthMPowers has long embraced that philosophy through programs such as GEM, Student Health Advocates and the Youth Advisory Board. The conference offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on what authentic youth engagement looks like and how organizations can continue improving the ways they partner with young people.

Here are five key lessons we brought home.

1. Youth Are Leaders Now

One of the strongest themes throughout the conference was that youth leadership should not be viewed as preparation for the future.

Young people are already contributing ideas, solving problems, and creating meaningful change in their schools and communities. Conference organizers emphasized creating opportunities for youth leaders to work alongside executives, policymakers, nonprofit leaders, and other decision-makers as equal partners.

When organizations make room for youth leadership, everyone benefits.

2. Move Beyond Participation to Partnership

Several conference sessions focused on student advisory councils and authentic youth engagement. Topics included sustaining youth leadership structures and creating opportunities for young people to influence decisions rather than simply participate in activities.

True youth engagement means making room for young people to shape conversations, contribute ideas, and influence outcomes.

3. Focus on Strengths, Not Deficits

One takeaway that resonated deeply was the concept of viewing youth through an asset-based lens.

Rather than focusing primarily on challenges or needs, conference presenters encouraged organizations to recognize the wealth young people already bring with them including aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital.

When we recognize these strengths, youth voice becomes even more powerful.

4. Data and Youth Voice Belong Together

A session on Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) taught participants how to move youth from being subjects of research to becoming partners in discovery and change.

This approach equips young people to investigate issues affecting their communities and develop solutions informed by their own experiences. The result is often a deeper understanding of challenges and more meaningful solutions.

5. Intergenerational Leadership Creates Better Outcomes

Perhaps the most inspiring lesson from the conference was the value of intergenerational leadership.

Conference organizers described the gathering as an opportunity for youth leaders and adult changemakers to stand “side by side as equals.” They noted that combining the creativity, urgency, lived experience, and insight of young people with the expertise and perspective of adults can strengthen communities and accelerate positive change.

That’s a principle HealthMPowers sees every day through our work with students, families, educators, and community partners.

Bringing These Lessons Forward

As the new school year begins, these lessons offer both inspiration and direction.

Whether through our Youth Advisory Board, student leadership initiatives, or school partnerships, we remain committed to creating environments where young people are heard, valued, and empowered to lead.

Because when youth voices help light the way, stronger communities are sure to follow. 🚀
